Picture this: You just finished a beautiful bathroom remodel. The tile is stunning, the fixtures gleam, and you can’t wait to enjoy that first hot shower. It looks perfect.
But looks can be deceiving.
Behind those beautiful tiles, a battle is being fought. Water is relentlessly trying to escape the shower pan, seep into your walls, and destroy your home from the inside out. And the only thing standing in its way? Waterproofing.
At Cowboy Tile Co., we’ve been building showers since 1992. Over three decades, we’ve torn out countless “failed” showers—showers that looked fine on the surface but were rotting underneath. That’s why we tell every client: waterproofing isn’t just important. It’s the most important part of your entire shower build.
Here’s why.
The Hidden Danger Behind Your Walls
Let’s start with a hard truth: Tile and grout are not waterproof.
Yes, you read that correctly. Tile is water-resistant, and grout is actually porous. When water hits your shower walls day after day, some of it will inevitably seep through the grout and behind the tile.
If there’s nothing back there but regular drywall or untreated wood, that moisture has nowhere to go. It sits. It soaks. And it starts to cause problems:
- Mold and Mildew: Dark, damp environments are breeding grounds for toxic mold. Once mold gets into your wall cavities, it’s expensive to remove and hazardous to your health.
- Rotting Wood: The wooden studs and subfloor behind your shower will eventually rot, compromising the structural integrity of your bathroom.
- Tile Failure: When the substrate gets wet and deteriorates, your tiles lose their grip. They start to loosen, crack, or pop off entirely.
- That “Bathroom Smell”: That musty odor you sometimes notice in older bathrooms? That’s often hidden moisture and mold, not poor cleaning habits.
The scary part? By the time you see water stains on your ceiling downstairs or notice tiles getting loose, the damage has been going on for months—sometimes years.
The Old Way: Building to Fail
Back in the day (and yes, we remember those days), many builders relied on a single moisture barrier behind the backer board, or worse, they installed tile directly onto drywall in non-wet areas. They called it “water-resistant,” but it wasn’t.
These old methods created showers that lasted just long enough to get through a home inspection, but failed homeowners down the road. If you’ve ever bought a 90s home and discovered the shower was rotting from the inside, you know exactly what we’re talking about.
At Cowboy Tile Co., we believe a shower should last as long as your house. Not 5 or 10 years. 30 years or more.
The Cowboy Tile Solution: Schluter Systems
That’s why we became certified in Schluter Systems—the industry gold standard for waterproofing.
So, what is a Schluter System? In simple terms, it’s like wrapping your entire shower in a watertight tank.
Here’s how it works:
1. KERDI-BOARD: The Waterproof Core
Instead of using cement backer board that can absorb and hold moisture, we use KERDI-BOARD. This rigid foam board is completely waterproof. Water cannot soak into it. Period.
2. KERDI Membrane: Sealing Every Seam
We cover every seam, corner, and joint with a special bonding membrane called KERDI. Think of it as heavy-duty waterproof tape that fuses the boards together into one seamless unit.
3. Waterproof Seals
Every penetration—whether it’s a shower arm, a valve, or a bench leg—gets a specialized seal. Water cannot sneak in around your fixtures.
4. The Curbless Option
For curbless showers (which are all the rage right now), the Schluter system allows us to create proper sloping and drainage while maintaining 100% waterproof integrity.
5. DITRA for Floors
Even on bathroom floors outside the shower, we often use DITRA underlayment. It provides uncoupling (so tiles don’t crack from floor movement) and acts as a vapor barrier to protect the subfloor.
The result? A shower that isn’t just “water-resistant.” It’s 100% waterproof.
The “Leak Test” That Proves It
One of the coolest things about working with Schluter systems? We can actually test our work.
After the waterproofing is installed but before a single tile goes up, we can perform a flood test. We temporarily plug the drain and fill the shower pan with water. We let it sit for 24 hours.
If there’s a leak, we find it before the tile is installed—when it’s easy to fix. If the water level stays steady, we know with 100% certainty that your shower is watertight.
Try doing that with a traditional mud bed and tar paper.
What Happens When Waterproofing is Done Right
When you invest in proper waterproofing, you’re buying more than just a shower. You’re buying:
- Peace of Mind: You’ll never lie in bed at night wondering if your shower is leaking into your living room.
- Health: No hidden mold. No musty smells. Just a clean, fresh bathroom.
- Durability: Your tile stays stuck. Your walls stay solid. Your shower looks beautiful for decades.
- Resale Value: When it’s time to sell your home, a properly waterproofed bathroom is a huge selling point. Buyers don’t want a project; they want a home that’s built right.
The Cowboy Tile Promise
At Cowboy Tile Co., we’ve been in this business long enough to know what works and what doesn’t. We’ve torn out enough failed showers to know exactly where builders cut corners. And we’ve made a promise to ourselves and to our clients:
We don’t cut corners. Ever.
When you hire us, you’re not just paying for tile installation. You’re paying for 30+ years of experience. You’re paying for Schluter certification. You’re paying for the knowledge that your shower will be built to last.
Because at the end of the day, a beautiful shower that leaks is just an expensive disaster waiting to happen. A beautiful shower that’s 100% waterproof?
That’s an investment in your home and your family’s health.
